Utgångspunkten...

Jag ville för egen del skapa ett system där jag kunde dokumentera och presentera min myntsamling. Det skulle vara möjligt att visa en bild på myntet tillsamans med fakta om myntet, kvalitet, inköpsinformation, osv. Rutiner för att lägga in nytt material skulle vara enkla och snabba och det skulle vara enkelt att editera och komplettera befintligt material.

Det var också viktigt att använda befintliga datorprogram och då blev slutsatsen att det mesta skulle gå att göra via webbläsaren. För att säkerställa att klienten är plattformsoberoende (möjlig att köra på olika datorsystem med olika webbläsare) fokuserades utvecklingen på serversidan (webbservern, den dator på nätet där bilder och databas ligger) och kända komponenter användes.

Tekniken

Databasen för myntsamlingen är en MS Access-databas.

Sidorna är, förrutom HTML, skrivna med VB-skript och ASP (Active Server Pages). Detta möjliggör interaktiva "mallsidor" som kan fyllas med material genom en sk. OBDC-koppling till databasen.

Till detta krävs en Windows 95/98/NT/ME/2000 med Personal Webserver eller Internet Information Server 4.0/5.0.

Webbhotell erbjuder idag möjligheten att köra ASP och databaser, ofta som standard.

Bilderna

Bilderna är scannade med en flatbädds HP-skanner i 300 dpi (punkter per tum).

Därefter bearbetas de i photoshop 7.0 och sparas för webben som 1000 pixlar breda JPEG-bilder, med kvalitet mellan 40 och 70 procent. Detta brukar ge en bildstorlek på strax under 100 kB.

The starting point ...

I wanted to create a system where I could document and present my coin collection. It should be possible to display an image of the coin together with facts about it, quality, purshase information etc. Routines for adding new material should be simple and fast och it should be simple to edit and supplement existing material.

It was also important to be able to use existing computer programs and the conclusion then was that most things should be able to do with the web browser. To ensure that the client is independent of plattform (possible to run on different computer systems with different web browsers), the development was focused on the server side (the web server, the computer on the net where images and the database lies) and well known components were used.

The technology

The database for the coin collection is an MS Access database.

The pages are, besides HTML, written with VB-script and ASP (active Server Pages). This allows inveractive templates to be filled with material though an ODB-connection to the database.

For this, a Windows 95/98/NT/ME/2000 with Personal Webserver or Internet Information Server 4.0/5.0 is needed.

Web hotels today, offer ASP and database connectivity, often as a standard.

The images

The images are scanned with a flat bed HP scanner in 300 dpi.

Then the images were processed in Photoshop 7.0 and saved for the webb as 1000 pixels wide JPEG images with quality between 40 and 70 percent. This usually gives an image size just bellow 100 kB.
